Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani was born in the year 470 AH (1077 CE) in the town of Jilan, in present-day Iran. He belonged to the noble family of Al-Hasan ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He was blessed with a miraculous birth, as his mother saw a vision of the Prophet (peace be upon him) before his conception, and his father heard a voice from the unseen saying "Name him Abdul Qadir, for he will be a master of all masters". He was also endowed with extraordinary intelligence, wisdom, and piety from a young age.
Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani left his hometown at the age of 18 to seek knowledge and spiritual guidance in Baghdad, the capital of the Islamic world at that time. He studied under various eminent scholars and jurists, and mastered various sciences and disciplines. He also embarked on a rigorous path of asceticism and worship, spending many years in solitude and meditation. He also performed numerous miracles and signs that testified to his status as the supreme saint and helper of Islam. He was known as Muhiyuddin (the reviver of religion), Ghawth al-Azam (the greatest helper), Piran-e Pir (the master of masters), and Dastagir (the holder of hand).
